SMITH AND JAEGER GAUGES O-RING PRICE LIST May 2010 These O-rings can be used to refurbish standard Smith and Jaeger gauges as found on British classic cars. The original rings were chosen for their price but all the rings here are thicker and of high quality rubber.
Rings between the Dash and the gauge The O-rings used between the dash and gauge, labeled DASH for convenience, come in two cross sections as described below; Standard – Round cross sectioned. These were commonly used originally. Practical Square Sectioned – Square sectioned as sometimes originally used, Austin Healeys for example. Look better.
Rings used inside the gauge The O-rings used inside the gauges between glass and the bezel. They are always round sectioned. These are called the GLASS O-rings. Some gauges, usually Jaegers, have an additional round sectioned inner O-rings between the dial and a metal ring insert. These are labeled the INNER rings. Sometimes Jaeger gauges are labeled “Smith”
So we have the DASH between the dash and the gauge, the GLASS which is between the glass and the bezel, and sometimes there is a third - the INNER. As gauges tend to vary in small ways it has always been difficult to supply the Glass and Inner rings that have a perfect fit. Slight variations can make it very difficult to replace the bezel. But to make the rings of a smaller cross section would result in the glass rattling and allow ingress of moisture. Thus the development of the sponge rubber Glass and Inner rings using high grade closed cell sponge rubber. This considerably improves the resistance to water when you get caught in the rain with your hood down.
